Then the IOC checklist must have it wrong (I take it they only list species,
not subspecies). If lumped P. simplex occurs from New Guinea to N and NE
Australia. If split, P. simplex occurs in N Australia and P. griseiceps from
New Guinea to NE Australia. As some people have pointed out, this split has
happened before.

I wish it were that easy. Unfortunately it's not quite this simple. If this
split had of happened as might have been expected (moving simplex out of the
lumped species) then the IOC checklist would give the range of simplex as
Aus to New Guinea. Unfortunately it doesn't - it gives the range of simplex
as NE Aus only.
So what happened in the IOC checklist to the remainder of this previously
lumped species? It appears to have fallen off. Looking at the ranges of
other Whistlers, none of them appear to have grisieceps absorbed into them.
Confusing.
