I've been comparing the latest Clements v6 to the IOC checklist.
I've encountered a few difficulties with the bird listed by Clements
as "Grey-headed Whistler *Pachycephala griseiceps*". This species does not
appear listed in the IOC checklist. Clements gives the range as New Guinea
to NE Australia.
To complicate things both IOC and Clements list Grey Whislter *P.
simplex*as occurring in NE Australia. Therefore Clements implies that
*griseiceps* and *simplex* both occur, whereas IOC list only one species.
Digging through old references, *griseiceps* was formerly a subspecies of *
simplex* with a range of NE New Guinea only.
The form* griseiceps* does not get a mention in my Pizzy and Knight Aussie
fieldguide, so on the surface the listing in Clemets appears to be an error.
However there's probably more to this than meets the eye. Is *griseiceps* a
synonyn of somthing else? Looking at the number of species of
*Pachycephala*Whistler Clements lists for Australia mainland it comes
to 9, whereas the
fieldguide has only 8.
Any one shed any light on this?
Thanks
