Thanks Peter, but that paper wasn't the official
split of Australian Painted Snipe from the Asian
Painted Snipe. Danny and Brett's paper suggested
to the ornithological world that the split should
occur, based on morphological measurements and
plumage differences. However, given the reliance
these days on genetic information the official
Australian lists (taxonomists?) still didn't
fully recognise this suggestion. The only lists
which did recognise Danny and Brett's
recommendation on an official basis (and full
credit to them) was the Federal government's EPBC
listing, and the recent 'CSIRO List of Australian
Vertebrates'. I have it on good authority that
without the soon-to-be published paper on the
genetics the new C & B list was still going to
have it listed as R. benghalensis.

Cheers, Dean
P.S. If anyone would like a copy of the paper
Peter referred to I can forward it via email.

Actually Dean, you are a bit out of date.
The split of Australian Painted Snipe
(Rostratula australis) from the (Asian) Painted
Snipe (Rostratula benghalensis) has already been
published, by Brett Lane and Danny Rogers, years
ago. This flowed from an AWSG conference in 1999
the abstract of their presentation is in The
Stilt 35: 63?64. The reference of the paper
itself is: Lane, B., & Rogers, D. 2000. ?The
Australian Painted Snipe Rostratula
(benghalensis) australis: an endangered species?? The Stilt 36: 26?34.

cheers, Peter Lansley
