What I saw was something splashing in the sea beyond the exposed mud
towards the edge of the mangroves. I distinctly saw a couple of blows
(so it wasn't a fish or a croc), and I thought I caught sight of
brownish back. But there was no dorsal fin.

Could you describe what you saw a little more. surfacing behavior, colour,
number, size, dorsal fin shape and position, blow size/shape etc. Length of
view?
