Hi Birders
Since 1970, the NSW Field Ornithologists Club, now known as Birding NSW, has
published an Annual Report that features all the interesting and unusual
sightings for the State in any one year. It includes the highlights from the
6 Regional Reports (Canberra Region, Central Coast, Clarence Valley,
Eurobodalla & Far South Coast, Hunter & the Illawarra Region) as well as
interesting sightings from all the local bird club newsletters, information
from Birding-aus, Birding of Line and NSW Birdline, as well as information
from individuals who annually report on their special sightings that they
have made throughout the year. The Report also includes the Annual report of
the NSW Records Appraisal Committee.
The Report for 2004 is approx 76 pages, and reports on 406 species with
information coming from 100 journals and newsletters and records from 498
observers. The report provides an overview of the nesting of colonial
waterbirds and seabirds, arrival and departure dates of migrants and the
passage of the rarer species across trhe State.
There were a number of unusual or otherwise significant observations in
2004, with the Elegant Parrot now being officially added to the NSW after
one was seen at Fowlers Gap, western NSW, bringing the NSW List to 593
species. In addition a number of species that have rarely occured in NSW
were reported. These include the Pied Imperial Pigeon at both Milligandi
near Bega and on Lord Howe Island, a Great Frigatebird at Yamba, a
Light-mantled Sooty Albatross off Wollongong and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper
at Ash Island.
Copies of the Report are available from Allan Richards, Birding NSW, P.O.
Box Q277, QVB Post Shop, Sydney NSW 1230 at a cost of $5 plus $1.50 postage.
