What is this washing your car at home activity? I thought that just about
everywhere had banned the washing your car at home, due to drought and
subsequent water use restrictions. Surely it isn't just Canberra with these
rules. I know I haven't washed a car for over 5 years.

On to what I hope is the real aim of the question. As long time coordinator of
the Garden Bird Survey for COG (and author of the books about it), I often
mentioned in my promotionals to COG, about the birds seen whilst hanging out
the washing and this had started a bit of a comic relief thread. Ultimately the
activity being done is hardly relevant. Although hanging out the washing is
typically done looking up. I can say that in the first 17 years at my current
GBS Site (within the first 21 years of the survey), I have recorded 113 species
at or over the 100 M radius (of unlimited altitude) of my site. Many good ones
noticed whilst hanging out the washing that may well not have been noticed on
that particular day, otherwise, typically raptors, ibis, swifts, woodswallows,
etc. However I can be fairly sure that none have been noticed whilst washing a
car at home, that I would not have noticed the same day otherwise.
