Dear all,
An overseas friend of mine is planning a short (c. 5-day) birdwatching
trip to the Top End (incl Pine Creek and Kakadu) within the next three
weeks. I have seen recent requests for information regarding this topic,
but I didn't find answers to all my friend's questions. Therefore, I was
wondering whether some kind soul could give me some up-to-date
information. Any info you can share would be highly appreciated,
especially the following:
- Is the Red Goshawk nest at Mataranka still active? If not,
are there other current stake-outs?
- Many people seem to have dipped on the White-throated
Grasswren in their recent trip reports. Is Waterfall Creek still the
only accessible place? Have the roads there been opened up by now?
- Are there any reliable sites for Yellow Chat in the region?
- Where is a good spot at this time of year (May/June) for some
of the rarer finches, such as Yellow-rumped and Pictorella Mannikin or
Gouldian Finch?
- Is the old mangrove site at Channel Island (Darwin) provided
in older guidebooks still accessible? If not, are there any new/better
sites for some of the difficult mangrove specialties, such as
White-breasted Whistler?
- Can anyone provide suggestions as to where Red-backed and
Chestnut-backed Buttonquails can be seen at this season?
I would be very grateful for any advice.
Cheers
Rory O'Brien
