Thanks all,
for confirming the id. I had doubts because the picure in Simpson &
Day shows the black crown goes all the way to the back of it's head;
more than the bird I saw at WTP. Morcombe pictures it more like 'my
bird' and I already became more and more convinced that it was a
White-winged Black Tern.
Anyway, my lack of experience with terns did also play it's part.

Hi all,
Today Mike Tesch and I did a birdtour along the You Yangs and WTP.
Highlights were approximatley 10 Little Lorikeets at the You Yangs and
at WTP 4 Freckled ducks, a fantastic show of Short-tailed Shearwaters
(the birds came right up to Wilsons Point) and a possible White-winged
Tern. I managed to get one blurry picture from the tern. Anyone who
can confirm the id or tell me what other tern this might be, is
welcome to email me. The link you can find at Recent sightings page
from Birdline Victoria
http://www.eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?Culture=en-AU&Birdline=1&Path=8
We also saw a kind of Mannikin type bird: plain brown and a massive
mannikin type bill. Anyone seen something similar?
Regards,
Albert Vrielink
