G'day all

Recently, I've made friends with a beautiful Pied Currawong who decided that he wanted share some cherries that I was eating when we first met. Since then, he has called around each day to indulge in his rather expensive taste for a couple of nice, juicy cherries. I normally don't go for feeding wild birds, believing that a bird bath is best, but this guy is just irresistable and he's limited to three cherries a day, no matter how cajolingly he stares at me with those beautiful golden eyes.

Also recently a pair of Common Mynahs have started to visit my backyard. I haven't chased them off because I generally believe that there's no point to harassing a couple of feral birds by individuals, preferring that strident, broad-based measures should be taken to control these populations.

That all ended today when my currawong friend was waiting for his cherries just now. He was perched on the garden furniture while I removed the pits from his cherries (I don't want him flying into nearby Garigal National Park and depositing cherry stones there). Then all hell breaks loose as the two mynahs jump my pied friend, wrestle him to the ground and give him a savage clawing and pecking. I've never heard a currawong make such loud distress calls.

I'm generally known as one of those people who dodge ants and wouldn't hurt a fly. I'm also getting a slingshot and ballbearings and those mynahs are dead birds perching.
