A recent posting said the Purple Gallinule was another (older?) name for a
Purple Swamp-hen, by which I mean Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus. I assume
you're referring to the same thing, but I Googled it and found
http://www.birdsaustralia.com.au/hanzab/HANZAB_list_june03.pdf, which says:
Porphyrio martinica Purple Gallinule
Porphyrio porphyrio Purple Swamphen
If HANZAB lists Porphyrio martinica, then I assume it can be, or has been,
found somewhere in Australia or NZ. None of my Australian books list it, so
I assume it's found in NZ or is a rare vagrant. Can someone fill me in?
Also, when is it acceptable to just say Porphyrio porphyrio instead of
Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus?
How commonly are they referred to as Purple Gallinules?
