According to the National Photographic Index of Austn Wildlife
(1988), once the two Whipbird chicks have 'fledged' (apparently they
leave the nest before they're ready to fly), each parent takes on the
care of one infant. Throughout last week, though, I observed that the
two chicks in our garden (Mt Mee / Ocean View, 500m, SEQ) were being
fed by a single parent. I cannot know whether this was always the
same parent. But I can say that, unlike the previous week, I did not
see two adult birds in our garden at any one time during last week.
Seems like several possibilities: 1/ one parent may've died,
& the other is now doing the work of both; 2/ they raise young
differently from the description in the NPI essay...?
Any suggestions?
