This morning, Sunday 3rd December 2006, Alan McBride and I enjoyed a
good morning's birding at a few good places in the Hawkesbury (approx.
55 km NW of Sydney CBD).
The Windsor-Richmond Turf Farms produced a juv. Spotted Harrier, Stubble
and several Brown Quail (we had great views of both species on the
ground), Rufous and Brown Songlarks (a couple of the former species
appeared to have young), Singing Bushlarks, White-winged Trillers, a
number of Zebra Finches, several White-browed Woodswallows and Pallid
Cuckoos.
At Bakers Lagoon which is almost completely dried up there was a single
Red-necked Stint with about 30 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers were present
amongst very few other water birds. A Bar-shouldered Dove and a Sacred
Kingfisher was also calling at Bakers Lagoon.
At Pitt Town Lagoon, we had prolonged views of the Ruff a couple of
times along the southern end of the lagoon as well a 3 Wood and about
300 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, a Greenshank, a Latham's Snipe, 5
Red-necked Avocets, 10 Red-kneed Dotterels, 2 Black-tailed Native-hens,
a Buff-banded Rails, 3 Australian Crakes, a Whiskered Tern, about 40
Glossy Ibis, 5 Pacific Herons, 4 Yellow-billed and about 10 Royal
Spoonbills, as well as 15 Australian Shelduck amongst 8 other species of
waterfowl and many other water birds.
I had another look at the Turf Farms and found one of the pairs of
Banded Lapwings with only 2 chicks (one of the chicks was missing!) and
noticed that the White-browed Woodswallows (about 10 seen) along Edwards
Rd in the Richmond Lowlands have 2 young fledglings. There were
White-winged Trillers, Rufous Songlarks and a pair of Immature Pallid
Cuckoos in the same paddocks with these Woodswallows.
