Tim,
It is an odd pose. I think if I saw it, I would perhaps first think Striped 
Honeyeater but it isn't, the stripes are in the wrong place. However the only 
possibility that I think it actually is, is a White-winged Triller. Not an 
Oriole or Cicadabird.

If as you say "the top of the head was striped from side to side - the light 
and dark brown stripes running across the head." .... then these are bars, not 
stripes. Bars go across the body, stripes go along the body.
