I don't know if there is a direct translation or derivation but the following
may help tie things together.
From 'Birds - Their Latin names explained' by A E Gotch there is -
Jackdaw - C(orvus) monedula
monedula (L) a jackdaw, a daw; daw is an English word meaning a bird of the
crow kind.
Then, from 'A Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names' by James A Jobling there is
-
Gracula L. graculus, the Jackdaw Corvus monedula (cf. syn. genus Graculus,
chough Pyrrhocorax).
graculina L. graculus, the Jackdaw; -inus, resembling.
The genus Gracula has two members (Howard and Moore) - the Ceylon Grackle G
ptilogenys and the Southern Grackle or Hill Myna G religiosa
These Gracula species are placed among the Sturnidae (Starlings).
The North American grackles of the genus Quiscalus are members of the
Icteridae (New World Blackbirds).
Jobling has a long and interesting section oassociated with Quiscalus.
Quiscalus Specific name Gracula quiscala (now Quiscalus quiscula)
quiscula L quis, what; qualis, of what kind; Linnaeus's original description
(Systema Naturae(1758), (Ed.10), book 1, p. 109) of the Purple Grackle
Quiscalus was based on Catesby's (1731) Monedula purpurea, the Purple Daw, and
Brown's (1725) Merops niger, the Black Bee-eater,...
and he then goes on the expound on the confusion that appeared to reign...
I found the original reference back to 'Monedula' quite interesting...

Does anyone know the origin of this - is it just 'grackle-like' ? I thought
this but the actual grackle genus is called something completely different.
Also, where do Pied Currawongs nest in the Sydney area? I've seen juveniles
of magies and butcherbirds but don't recall ever seeing these....
