A somewhat surprising addition was made to my garden list (Balgowlah Heights,
Lower North Shore, Sydney) on Friday when I returned home early afternoon on
Friday to discover a quail disappearing rapidly into the denser undergrowth. I
assumed it to be a brown quail as these are common in the nearby bush (Sydney
Harbour National Park).
A bit of stalking and waiting ultimately revealed a splendid painted button
quail who scratched around making circular depressions in the leaf litter. It
was silent except for one single 'bark' - a vocalisation not noted in any of
the field guides I have (Simpson/Day, Morecombe, Pizzey/knight). Sadly it
only remained that afternoon/evening and by next morning had gone.
Anyone have any idea whether this is likely to be;
a) aviary escape
b) drought driven nomad
c) other?
Cheers
Matthew
