Yes, it would be interesting to know what proportion of the rarites that blow in to Aus are actually observed and correctly identified. My guess is that it might be less than 10%. Given that this group is a subset of the Aus birding community, the proportion that is discussed here would be lower than that.

Your American Plover shots certainly brings back good memories of the
bird we saw on Kooragang Island, Newcastle a few years ago. I may have
also had a probable one 9 years ago in Cairns before I think the two
species were split. It is quite possible that this species may occur
annually in Australia with them going unnoticed or unconfirmed.
