To Michael and other concerned birders,
Clearly this debate has enraged quite a few of you. Fair enough, you are
entitled to your objections. But that is no longer good enough. I keep
getting this feeling that climate change and the associated destruction is
like planning a big party; you spend months talking about it, buy table
arrangements, make sure the garden looks just right, notify the neighbours,
then 3 days before the party is due to start, everyone arrives and nothing
is ready. We're at the stage where it is no longer good enough to say 'I
don't like it'. You also need 'but I support this instead'. We need to get
behind ideas and technology that are going to make a positive difference to
climate change immediately. Like paying off a home loan, the more we do now
the easier it will be later.
So you don't like wind turbines? That's fine. What do you like? What
concessions are you prepared to make? Put your heart on your sleeve and
declare it. "I love birds enough that I'm even prepared to support a Green
Govt, and maybe forgo a couple of dollars in my pocket as the economy
battles." This is one of those problems that putting your head in the sand
won't fix.
