I found part of the EES for Bald Hills at: http://www.wind-power.com.au/news/BaldHills_pdfs/BH_APPENDIX_11_part1.pdf The turbines they were proposing to install are said by their manufacturer to produce at 106dbA in high wind speeds. This is not quiet. It'll be low frequency sound which propagates well so it might be audible at 1km and perhaps even annoying to humans at that distance. The PDF discusses this. Any impact on birds is very hard to guess. Because of the frequencies involved I'd guess bird communication would be affected only very close to a turbine.
