I go back pre dark Ages and can recall in the blue tits in England doing
exactly the same thing. I can also recall reading some literature which
advised that the habit was unknown until the early 1950's and apparantly
never before the War.
Might it be that the thieving came with the change from cardboard closures to aluminium foil?
