I have just read Mark Whittaker's article on the Grey-headed Lapwing in the
Weekend Australian colour supplement. I think it's a very good piece, but I
think that Mark missed one reason why this 'twitch' has become so popular.

It's simply that this is a large, unmistakeable bird that has stayed in a
confined area for a long time. I only went to see it on the third weekend,
being reasonably confident it would still be there, and I would be able to
find it quickly. From memory of the twitching scene in the UK I seem to
remember that most twitches were inconveniently small birds which tended not
to stay around very long.
