My wife, Kathryn, and myself, met up with the GhL on 18 July. Weather fine,
though overcast, slight breeze. The Lapwing was foraging in the paddock
opposite the silos, towards the western end. We arrived at 1415h, stayed in the
car, and left at approx. 1500h. We were joined for a while by a passer-by on a
cycle. Although obviously aware of our presence, the bird did not flush.
The GhL appeared healthy and alert, but was clearly impeded by the
leg-swelling. The leg was frequently raised, although the bird was able to walk
on it, albeit tentatively. The swelling appeared large, although the size may
well be accentuated by caked mud. The paddocks were wet following recent rain.
Good luck, if you are visiting.
Stuart Pell (Brisbane).
