Vikki, I have seen similar behaviour between birds at my regular spot, Pehrhyn Estuary in Sydney. Both Great and Little Egret often follow behind groups of Little Black Cormorants feeding in the shallows. They are seen dashing to pick off smaller fish disturbed and missed by the Cormorants or are standing still necks outstretched at 45 degrees to suddenly lunge into the water and come up with a tiny flapping fish. A White-Faced Heron sometimes also joins in. Where a creek runs into the estuary a White-Faced Heron is often seen feeding alongside and following a Royal Spoonbill as its bill scythes from side to side through the water. Magic from simplicity!
