Hello, my name is Terri Asmus and I am desperately trying to find someone or
somebody/s to help in our community's fight against the Mary River Dam
proposal. I've emailed a couple people within the birdwatching loop in regards
to this issue, (Roy from Brisbane and another lady that does bird tours on the
Sunshine Coast) but am yet to hear back from anyone. A person I did contact
directed me to this site and I am hoping that I will find some help here. Below
is a letter I sent out explaining my problem. I have written to sooooo many
people saying the same thing over and over that I thought I should just post a
copy of one of those letters in order to best explain things.

Hello,
My name is Terri Asmus and I need your help in fighting this dam proposal on
the Mary River near Gympie. This dam is a social, environmental and
agricultural disaster. There is over 7000 hectares of prime farming land and
precious ecosysytems going under this dam. 872 properties are being resumed
along with many hundreds more for infrastructure and buffer zones around it's
fringes. The loss of habitat for local grassland, rainforest, river/creek
&stream and open range species is sickening. The dam will be horribly shallow,
take 5 years to build and 6 years to fill if it fills at all. It will emit more
greenhouse gases than a coal fired power station and endanger four known
freshwater species that are protected on the Department of Environment and
Heritage list, the Lungfish, Mary River Cod, Mary River Turtle and Honey Blue
Eye. These species are threaetened and some face extinction. My husband and I
have a farm in it's path and so face losing everything. Our farm is home to
dozens and dozens of different types of birds and I've loved birdwatching on an
amatuer level since I was a kid. People in Brisbane and the Gold Coast are
believing Beattie when he says this dam has to happen. They think because that
is their Premier's opinion then that is the only way. There are other ways.
This mega disaster doesn't need to happen.
So why have I contacted you? Can you help me find someone within the
birdwatching world who can help us from a conservation side of things. Someone
who may specialise in any species that call the Mary Valley home, any species
that are protected or vulnerable or threatened etc..that is in the immediate
path of this mega dam. Beattie has told us people power can't stop this, but we
here in the valley don't beleive that. We can't, there's too much at risk.
Please, if you have a moment, visit these websites set up in conjunction with
the dam fight. http://www.savethemaryriver.com/
http://www.travestonswamp.info/forum/ and perhaps pop your vote on this ABC
radio poll it's running for a week so may be closed by the time you read this
email http://www.abc.net.au/brisbane/vote/default.htm
Thankyou for your time,
Terri Asmus
