The Age http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/navy-depot-could-become-main-port/2006/01/22/1137864807011.html has an article today reporting on a proposal that Melbourne and Geelong docks be relocated to Point WIlson - "a site with internationally recognised wetlands, home to the endangered orange-bellied parrot", to quote the article. The main proponent - the Geelong Football Club president (!) says ""It would be cheaper to run channels from the heads coming into there rather than going right through to Port Melbourne and not upset all the environmentalists with the dredging.":

Looks like another battle could be looming, although there doesn't seem to be too much support for the proposal yet....
I think the idea with be vetoed hopefully by anybody involved in the docks that have used the Princess Hwy regularly.  That road is bad enough now without having all freight traffic from Pt Wilson to Melbourne, aswell as having dock workers having to travel to Pt Wilson.  Secondly I doubt they'd want to also have one dock for super freight and one for the run of the mill.  That'd mean more freight cranes and the like.  Besides the Orange Bellied Parot, what else has that as their home, as I'm not very familiar with the area.  I'm assuming it's the area south of The Spit at Werribee Treatment Plant, the area that's restricted.  Near the saltworks/marshes?
