Killer Kingfisher

For what it's worth, I recall a friend here in Brisbane who collected a
termite nest from a tree in the bush and mounted it in a tree in his
suburban garden. Had kingfishers nesting in it for a number of years.

He said that one essential is to mount the termite nest on a solid wooden
backing. The birds will tunnel in until they hit something solid
(tree-trunk out in the bush) before making the nesting chamber. If they can
tunnel right through, they will abandon the project.

That was about 40 years ago. Might be a about as hard to find a termites
nest these days as to find an old gumtree. Easier to bring home, though, if
you do.

Cheers

Syd
