According to my Macquarie its a Hindi word and derived from the Sanscrit
word Kokila. I'd assumed it was onomatopoeic but I'm not so sure now!

Heard my first Koel this morning in Drummoyne (inner-west Sydney).

I agree with Tony that first arrival reports aren't
earth-shaking pieces of data - but I find them interesting reading.
In particular I find Koels endlessly fascinating.

You could argue that an observation of Ross's Gull in Sydney Harbour
is not worth mentioning as it is of little ecological or conservation
significance and vagrant gulls of various species turn up every year.
A few subscribers might still be interested though.
