Last Sun 18th Sep, around 2pm, a male and a
female Koel flew into a Port Jackson Fig beside the waterside path at
Waverton Bay which is 2 bays west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the Nth
Side.
They immediately announced their arrival and were
immediately confronted by a couple of noisy miners and a couple of red wattle
birds and a few pied currawongs who seemed to be co-operating in
hasselling them. Regardless, the Koels stayed put oblivious to the lack of
warmth in the welcome and also to the passer- bys who were a mere couple
of feet under them.
Their calls to each other were accompanied by
constant flicking of their wings and tails. Their calls sounded different
to other Koels that I've heard. These calls sounded less mature than
those later in the year when the novelty of their call has long worn
off.
I was wondering if their call sounds deeper after
practice or whether these were the local kid and mate getting back before
everyone else and setting up a waterside patch.
They wasted no time in setting up the courtside.
They started immediately they zoomed in because I had not heard them previously
in the day and I was in the area from 12.30pm that
day.
