Hi Penny and others,
I purchased a Garmin GPS2 many years ago and apart from some initial
minor problems, which were fixed under warranty, it has run perfectly.
It has no problem beneath heavy cloud, as it shouldn't, but beneath
trees, obtaining a reading can be difficult. My technique in the open
forests of the Sydney area is to walk through the forest with the unit
switched on, having first obtained a sat. reading before entering the
forest. In this manner the unit has enough satellite glimpses to
maintain a reading. If one tries to obtain a reading beneath an open
forest canopy by switching the unit on beneath the canopy, it will
prove difficult unless there is a broad opening in the canopy. I
give-up beneath rainforest.
Andy

No - it is almost impossible to get a reading under a canopy (and heavy
cloud also) - you have to move to an area where there is clear sky
above and then wait, usually a bit longer than usual, to pick up the
satellites. Then you can move back quickly and hope to get a reading!
Further to Martin O'Brien's posting as below, please may I request that
respondents answer one additional question:
11. Have you successfully used your GPS instrument from
beneath the closed canopy of a rainforest?
There are a number of interesting bird species that favour rainforest
as preferred habitat.
