Google Earth - potential for birders?

My experience is that is varies enormously in the detail displayed. I can
see my house in Brisbane and enough detail to see every swimming pool in the
neighbourhood. However I can't make out much detail in the south west of
France or in the interior. It's a toy really.

It also downloads a lot of data as you run it - I hit 30 Meg in a quick look
at about 6 places. That will matter if you're on a 256 Meg per month plan.
