According to A F Gotch in 'Birds - Their Latin Names Explained' -
Brahminy Kite Haliastur indus

(Gr), the sea  astur (L) a species of hawk: named from the River Indus, it has a wide distribution from India to the Solomon Islands and the Philippines. Sometimes known as a Sea Eagle, it often frequents rivers and sea coasts. Brahman or Brahmin means having to do with prayer; this kite is held sacred by the Hindus.
