I had one of those interesting in traffic observations of a raptor that flew across the bow of my car [at an elevation of about 3 metres] around the vicinity of Balham and Grandard Rds this afternoon. It looked to be at the larger end of the falcon spectrum, and appeared to be charcoal coloured. It wasn't flying overly fast, it was reasonably broad of beam and didn't appear to have the right coloured underparts for a peregrine. [Pizzey and Black note that black falcons occasionally make it into the suburban environment]. Might be something to watch out for by people who are in the vicinity of the Archerfield airfield.

Regards, Laurie.
