Hi all,
I might as well have my say, everyone else (or at least the usual suspects) has.

After reading Tim Low's article in Wingspan (The Word is the Bird, June 2005), I was tempted to write a rejoinder and, in fact started to do so. After a few minutes I suddenly came to my senses and declared: "What a load of tripe!" and went onto something more useful and productive instead.
I think I watched Dr Who.

I really have to say Tim's article was one of the least interesting and/or sensible that I have seen in that journal.

Sorry, Tim, I think you are confused about why Australians are not interested in birds, let alone the rest of the environment.
Simplifying the names will not make one iota of difference.
