Greetings,
Coming late to this debate I would like to add that
accessability of names is related to how familure it sounds (i.e. hoe often it
or a similar word has been heard, or possibly read) and interest. How many of
you know four year olds who easily rattle off, Muttaburrasaurus langdonii
or some comic book out of space character. My birding friends use common
names so I use them. My plant friends use the binomials so I, like the four year
old, use Heimerlionodendron brunoniaum.
I can always learn the name of a beautiful woman, no
matter how exotic, though my pronunciation may not be 100%. Names are not a
block to interest but interest is a block to learning. If it serves a purpose,
people will learn and use just about anything; words, habits,
tools.
