Birdline Victoria Update No. 206
For the week ending: 29 May 2005
Sightings
30 May
The Northern Shoveler reported last week by Dave Torr was seen in the same
place today by Jeff Davies. It is on the very long 115E pond in the NE
corner of the plant. Pass the Borrow Pits and turn left by the two small
Conservation Ponds. Steve Davidson reports that today he saw a breeding
plumage Yellow Wagtail, race similima, just north of the Borrow Pits.
Enquiries reveal that what was presumably the same bird was seen by Bob
Swindley nearby some two weeks ago. Thanks Mike Carter.
26 May
A very cold and windy day kept most of the small birds hiding. Highlights
were a mature White-bellied Sea-Eagle on Borrie (eating what looked like a
Cygnet), a male Northern Shoveller on the long 115E ponds and a Pallid
Cuckoo at the Little River causeway. Lots of Red-necked Stints still
around - one or two in breeding plumage. Also lots of Curlew Sandpipers and
3 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers in breeding plumage in the T-Section. A few
Black-tailed Godwit and a solitary Common Greenshank were also present. Lots
of Red-kneed, Red-capped, Black-fronted and Double-banded Plover/Dotterel.
Two Black Kites on 260S Road. Couldn't find any Cape Barren Geese or
Freckled Duck today! Thanks Dave Torr.

One immature Banded Stilt (with seven Black-winged Stilts) at Sandy Cove

4 Crested Pigeons were observed perched on powerlines along Old Marlo Road
this morning. Regular sightings of small groups appear to be the norm as
they slowly but inevitably expand their range in this area of Far East
Gippsland. Thanks Jacquie and Len Axen.
24 April
Stunning male Flame Robin at Truganina Swamp Altona Bird was on garden fence
at rear of houses on Purnell Street near to hide. 1-3 females have been
sighted in the area on and off for about the last month. Also 1 Red-kneed
Dotterel in front of hide, 2 Purple-crowned Lorikeets and Brown Falcon
flying over. Thanks Colin Clark.
23 May
53 species were recorded during the EGBOC outing at Eastern Beach Lakes
Entrance. Interesting sightings included, 1 Little Egret, 6 Great Egrets, a
small party of 8 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos, a pair of Golden Whistlers
and a number of Crescent Honeyeaters heard calling from the coastal dunes.

There was a pair of Gang Gang Cockatoos at Boroondara Park, Camberwell.

Highlights of the Eastern Treatment Plant survey this month include 3
Freckled Duck, 2 Wedge-tailed Eagle--this is the first record for the plant
and area--25 Red-necked Avocet, 5 Double-banded Plover and 1 White-winged

At Jack Smith Lake this morning, 45 Blue-winged Parrots, 20 Flame Robins, 2
Wedge-tailed Eagles. Thanks Duncan Fraser.

At Wombelano Falls (Kinglake National Park) there was a male Rose Robin, a
Lewin's Honeyeater and 4 Red-browed Treecreeper. Thanks Michael Ramsey.

Along Oaklands Road at Oaklands Junction (5km north of Melbourne Airport)
there was a Black Falcon. Thanks Michael Ramsey.

On Loemans Road Bulla there were approximately 1250 Little Corella and a
male Peregrine Falcon, that killed and ate a Feral Pigeon. Thanks Michael

20 May
While bird surveying Pyramid Creek (just south of Cohuna) revegetation
areas, there was three juvenile Elegant Parrots. Thanks Chris Coleborn.
19 May
In Duck Arm, three White-bellied Sea Eagles, Two adults, one juvenile, one
of the adults was carrying a large stick towards the nest. At the Crescent
Island rookery, Pelicans are displaying red bill pouches and mating
behaviour, and on sand spits, Black Swans are sitting on nests. Thanks

18 May
Working on a small farm near Echuca (about 1km along the Echuca-Serpentine
Road from the Murray Valley Hwy) yesterday, found a lone Letter-winged Kite
being harassed by a pair of Black-shouldered Kites. It repeatedly went to
roost in the foliage near the top of a large River Red Gum, and was
repeatedly mobbed into flight again by its relatives. Eventually they left
it alone for a while and it stayed concealed in the canopy of the RRG until
after I moved on. Thanks Lawrie Conole.
17 May
There were 8 Gang-gang Cockatoos in a schoolyard in East Ringwood, NE of
Melbourne. They’ve been there at least 3 days in a row. Thanks Karen

16 May
Interesting sightings made around Bruthen during an EGBOC outing included a
pair of Scarlet Robins and a small party of Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos.
At Monkey Creek in State Forest dominated by Stringybarks 1 male Rose Robin
together with small groups of Golden Whistlers and White-throated
Treecreepers were observed actively feeding. Thanks Len Axen.
