Hi All,
Spent the weekend at Gundy, (25km north of Scone NSW).
Although the country is very dry the Pages River was still just flowing and
there were masses of noisy birds. Raptors common, a pair of black
WEDGE-TAILED EAGLES sitting on the wind blowing over a saddle between
hilltops, a LITTLE EAGLE circling, BLACK KITE, BROWN FALCON on a wire, a
noisy HOBBY, BLACK-SHOULDERED KITE, KESTRELS. Three WHITE-BELLIED
SEA-EAGLES circuited in formation, presumably from Lake Glenbawn a few km
away.
LITTLE PIED CORMORANTS, WHITE-FACED HERONS, CATTLE EGRETS and STRAW-NECKED
IBIS. On the pools, PACIFIC BLACK DUCKS and GREY TEAL, WOOD-DUCKS around the
drying dams. LAUGHING KOOKABURRA. CRESTED PIGEONS.
MUSK, LITTLE and RAINBOW LORIKEETS overflying, SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKTOOS,
GALAHS, KING & RED-RUMPED PARROTS, CRIMSON & EASTERN ROSELLAS
Six WHITE-BACKED SWALLOWS low over a
section of steep riverbank suitable for nesting.
Also WELCOME SWALLOWS and FAIRY MARTINS. Plenty of BLACK-FACED
CUCKOO-SHRIKES, a single WHITE-BELLIED CS. EASTERN YELLOW ROBIN, RUFOUS
WHISTLER SUPERB FAIRY-WRENS, YELLOW and plenty of YELLOW-RUMPED THORNBILLS.
WHITE-THROATED and BROWN TREECREEPERS.
Hundreds of NOISY FRIARBIRDS, a few YELLOW-FACED and
WHITE-PLUMED HONEYEATERS, EASTERN SPINEBILL in the garden, probably others
in the flowering red-gums and Grey Box but we weren't primarily birding .
DOUBLE-BARRED FINCH, SILVEREYES, OLIVE-BACKED ORIOLE,
MAGPIE-LARK, PIED BUTCHERBIRD, PIED CURRAWONG, AUSTRALIAN MAGPIE, SATIN
BOWERBIRDS, AUSTRALIAN RAVENS.
EUROPEAN STARLINGS the only dark
note.
The famous White of bird collecting fame, from Belltrees up
the road apiece, and John Gould of far greater fame, collected in and around
this area. If it ever rains again, springtime will be a birders paradice.
Cheers
Michael
