/Hi Tom
I am submitting a records paper that includes a couple of seabirds
from you vicinty. I wonder if you would have time to comment or know
someone who would?
The first is Tahiti Petrel:
Tahiti Petrel Pseudobulweria rostrata
New area record
Babuyan Claro - a single bird was seen offshore from here not long
before arriving there, 16/4/04 DA. It was approximately
shearwater-sized though it could not be directly compared with other
birds. It was the shape of a shearwater and flew with straight wings.
It had a dark bill, chocolate brown upperparts, head and upper
breast, with a clean break to a white lower breast belly and flanks.
No white was noticed on the underwings despite observation down to
20m, but the sea was rough. At a distance, the rump sometimes
appeared white but that seems to have been due to the extent of white
on the flanks and it was clearly brown at close quarters. There are
two previous records from the Philippines: Luzon 26/5/26 and Negros
21/8/63
and the other is Bulwer's Petrel for which I have video clips
including the attached
Many thanks for any help
