Robert McDonald and I saw 6 Fork-tailed Swifts flying
low over heathlands in the Crowdy Head NP,(near
Harrington, NSW Mid-north coast) last Wednesday
(9-2-05). This sighting was a tick for me so I was
quite excited, but I couldn't have guessed what was to
happen the next day when standing at the very end of
Nobby's Breakwall (Newcastle) watching shearwaters
when a huge flock of several hundred Fork-tails slowly
made their way south down the coast. No needletails
were seen in this flock. About an hour later we
observed another 50+ swifts flying south over the
Stockton Sandspit.
Other birds seen at Crowdy Head included Buff-banded
Rail, Southern Emu-wren and 40+ Bar-shouldered Dove.
In the Harrington rainforest a single juvenile
Rose-crowned Fruit-dove was seen, as well as 2 Varied
Triller and a female Regent Bowerbird feeding a young
one.
At Mudbishops Point, Old Bar, three Brown Quail were
seen as well as 3 Double-banded Plover, lots of
Sanderling and Little Tern with dep. young.
