I was at Woody Head this morning carrying out a
wader survey when I noticed a flock of 35+ low flying swifts. Expecting
them to be the usual White-throated Needletails I was pleasantly surprised to
see that they were, in fact, Fork-tailed Swifts. Fork-tails usually only
occur as individuals or in small numbers in large flocks of Needletails in this
area. There was a flock of 50+ Fork-tailed Swifts at Brooms Head in 2002,
however. Woody Head and Brooms Head are both on the NSW North Coast NE of
Grafton.
