Having just finished a whirlwind tour of the state, I'd wholeheartedly
recommend the following places:
Freycinet NP - saw many good things here, highlights being a Scrubtit
and a pair of Hooded Plovers with a fledging chick. Also has the
Hazards and Wineglass Bay as an attraction.
Port Arthur - Beautiful Firetail, Flame Robin, Dusky Robin, Swift
Parrot, and many more. All these were near the prison ruins, which is
another obvious attraction in the area. Close to Eaglehawk Neck,
where the Tassie Pelagics leave from.
Strathblaine - near Southport. Stayed at the Far South Backpackers who
have covenanted a 100 acre area which is surrounded by Forestry
clearfelling. All the local birds have moved in here. Highlights
were Olive Whistler, Spotted and Striated Pardalote (dipped on the 40
spotted pardalote all trip), Pallid, Fan-tailed, and Horsfields Broze
Cuckoo, Beautiful Firetail, and all four tassie robins, among others.
Also saw a Superb Lyrebird at the nearby Duckhole Lake - a feral bird
in this state, but still beautiful. Strathblaine is very near
Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, as well as being fairly near the
Tahune Airwalk at Geeveston.
Cradle Mountain was also fantastic, but birds were scarce as it was 3
degrees overnight when we were there, and it snowed the week before.
A quick caution. Tasmania's poor reputation with its Forestry
management is well deserved. Only those strong of stomach should
brave the drives through forestrly managed areas in the South East of
the state. Most depressing.
