Hi from South Africa and compliments of the season to you all. The bird Del is talking about was certainly known as a Black Egret, but there are now moves afoot to change the name to Black Heron. Another closely related "black" egret is Slaty Egret (I don't know of any plans to change this name to Slaty Heron). Interestingly both species belong to the genus Egretta.
