Frogmouths that flush

Hello fellow birders,

On the subject of tawny frogmouths that flush; rather than attempt to sit out
the approach of a fellow worker and I -both of us making quite a good deal of
noise on quad bikes, a group of no less than four frogmouths fled a young
eucalypt as we were surveying along the Sandover River, north-east of Alice
Springs. My friend, who was on the opposite side of the tree, claimed that
there were as many as six of the birds. Each alighted within another red gum,
just 50 or so metres away.

Whilst undertaking surveys within the Mount Crawford Forest, north-east of
Adelaide, in the spring of last year, an instance occurred where a pair of
frogmouths were flushed from the ground before me. One of the birds alighted
within a tree just a short distance away, allowing good views -the slight
chestnut colour of the plumage on the shoulders suggested it was a female. It
was my first record of the species on the ground, although in saying that, just
recently a juvenile / fledgeling was encountered cowering within a fallen red
gum hollow.
