A quick trip yesterday afternoon to the Western
Treatment Plant [WTP] (Werribee, Vic) failed to produce either of the Ruffs
recently seen by John Barkla, Richard Novotny and others. We searched Paradise Road lagoons, the T-section lagoons
and the Conservation Ponds. It being some hours from the next high tide may not
have helped. This is turning into Marj's and my jinx bird.
Some good birds seen all the same: no less than 14
Cape Barren Geese (10 at Paradise Rd, 4 at the T-section lagoons); Black-tailed
Native-Hen and Australian (Spotted) Crake at the Conservation Ponds; and Crested
Pigeons in two separate locations -- a first for us at WTP, though I believe
they've been turning up regularly for a couple of years
now.
A brilliant sight was tens of thousands of
waders feeding on what appears to be the recently partly-drained
lagoon to the NE of the road leading to the Little River mouth, not
far from the ford.
Thanks Richard Novotny for helpful
instructions with site-finding yesterday.
