Number of birdwatchers in Australia

Thinking about this thread today it struck me that the number of people involved in general landcare type activities in Oz (particularly treeplanting, but also wetland projects etc) appears to me to be much higher than you find in the UK and Europe, not sure about the US.
Maybe that makes up for the lower numbers of people focusing solely on birds?
