The unfortunately named Kakadu Beach was provided as compensation for the
destruction of the Dux Creek wader roost, now being converted into a canal
estate.
Although it provides shelter for some of the birds for some of the time
(disturbance being an ever-present problem) it can never hope to replace Dux
Creek. To that end other local roost sites are currently being investigated
for enhancement. But it's difficult to believe that, overall, birds will not
be lost.
Dux Creek was arguably the most valuable wader roost in the Moreton Bay
area. In a few years I recorded 32 species of wader and suspected others.
Counts of roosting waders were impressive, such as 1000 endangered Eastern
Curlews on occasions. And yes, I did my best to prevent its demise. And yes,
Jill Dening has done a terrific job to get us to the current position.
By the way, don't criticise the hides, Peter, or you'll incur the wrath of
Jill (she is away at the moment).

PS Local birders might want to know that the water level at Buckley's Hole
is extremely low at the moment. There are, however, two male Aus. Shovelers
present. A couple of days ago there were both Rufous Songlark and Spectacled
Monarch in the mangroves, and the snipe count reached eight. Rails and
crakes are still about but perhaps not for much longer.
PPS And thank goodness we've started calling the Rose-coloured Starling a
Rose-coloured Starling. If you want to use an archaic name, why not use Rosy
Pastor?
