In my copy of "The Birds of Britain and Europe" (Collins, 1972) there is an
entry for "Rose-coloured
Starling" (Sturnus roseus).

Is this the species claimed to have been sighted recently "at ~10am this
morning(Friday 3/9/04) near Lake Eda on Roebuck Plains Station by Joy
Tansey"?

If not, what is the scientific name of the bird in question?

I suggest it would be most helpful if, when reporting sightings of birds new to
Australia (and
therefore not in the Australian field guides), the scientific name be included
in the report.
Common names are often not a clear indicator of the particular species
concerned as sometimes these
common names are somewhat local to a particular area.
Many examples of this can be found throughout Australia in spite of attempts to
establish a standard
set of names for the Australian birds.

I hope this simple request does not initiate a deluge of postings on this topic.
My suggestion is simply intended to make life a little easier for those who are
more than mildly
interested in such sightings but who have limited experience with 'foreign'
birds.
It seems to me that anyone who has the knowledge, experience, skills and
willingness to make and
report such identifications should also be able to supply that small bit of
extra information.

Cheers
