Sightings
30 August
Highlights of a birdwatching morning at the Cabbage Tree Palms Reserve
included numerous Olive-backed Orioles, Golden Whistlers, a Large-billed
Scrubwren and a pair of Rose Robins. Thanks Len Axen.
29 August
An Eastern Curlew was seen feeding on the sand flats at low tide adjacent to
the mouth of the Snowy River. A very early season sighting for this area.

29 August
In the banksia heathland next to farmland on the Nhill- Harrow Road, 2 km
south of Stringybark Walk, there were 2 White-winged Triller, 1 possible
Slender-billed Thornbill, 1 Collared Sparrowhawk, as well as large numbers
of Tawny-crowned and White-faced Honeyeater. Thanks Tim Dolby.
29 August
At the BA Victoria survey of Mt Elgin Swamp (dry), a Trust for Nature
property near Nhill, there were half a dozen Rufous Songlark as well as
large numbers of Tree Martin. The property also supports an excellent array
of raptors, with 7 species recorded during the survey including Black, Kite,
Peregrine Falcon, Nankeen Kestrel, Black Shouldered Kite, Whistling Kite,
Brown Falcon and Brown Goshawk. Boobook Owl, Barn Owl, Tawny Frogmouth and
Owlet Nightjar (with a fantastic daylight view of a flushed bird) were also

At the Western Treatment Plant there was a Black Kite and 2 Fan-tailed
Cuckoo on New Farm Rd, 4 Glossy Ibis and 15 Black-tailed Godwit on Paradise
Rd as well as 6 White-necked Herons – T-section lagoons, a Fairy Tern – Kirk
Point and Marsh Sandpipers – Borrow Pits. Thanks Richard Nowotny.

There was a Western Rosella, presumably an escapee, at Darebin Park in
Ivanhoe. Thanks Anthea Fleming.
28 August
Fan Tailed Cuckoos have arrived in Marlo and incessantly called throughout
the day. Thanks Len Axen.
28 August
Steve Clark popped out to Lake Linlithgow today and checked out all the
nearby lakes and swamps: Lake Linlithgow had small numbers of Double-banded
Plovers on the northern shore line with some Red-necked Stints and
Red-capped Plovers, Lake Bullrush had an estimated 600-800 Black Swans and I
counted 64 nest mounds. A pair of Brolgas were also nesting here and Krause
Swamp had small numbers of Pink-eared Ducks and Hardheads and a pair of
Brolgas - not nesting as far as I could see.
28 August
Chris Doughty saw a Regent Honeyeater in the front garden of 7 Geale Street,

20+ Little Penguin loafing and diving just beyond and between Station and
Princes Piers, Port Melbourne. Thanks Richard Nowotny.

There was a Red-winged Parrot at Wheelers Hill, probably an aviary escapee.

There were two male White-winged Trillers near Pyramid Hill. Thanks Simon

There was a Powerful Owl at Shepherds Bush in Glen Waverly next to Jells
Park. Thanks Bruce Wedderburn.
24 August
A pair of Olive Backed Orioles heard calling in Southern Mahogony Gums along
the Old Marlo Road today. Thanks Len Axen.
24 August
A single Black Falcon was seen being mobbed by Little Raven’s on the 24th of
August at the intersection of Exford Road and Telephone Road at Exford.

22 August
At the monthly Eastern Treatment Plant Survey there was 1 Cape Barren Goose,
8 Yellow-billed Spoonbill, 1 Wood Sandpiper (an early date), 14 Sharp-tailed
Sandpiper (1st returns), 11 Red-necked Avocet, 13 Red-kneed Dotterel. 5 Tree
Martin (1st returns), 5 Fairy Martin (1st returns) and 3 Clamorous
Reed-Warbler (1st returns). Thanks Mike Carter.
Late August
There are still lots of Blue-winged Parrots at Point Wilson (up to 38), but
OBP seem to have disappeared except for two of those were released there.

Freckled Duck, up to 100 reported at Lake Guyatt in Sale, Duncan counted 70
this morning. Thanks Duncan Fraser.

David Coutts told Richard Loyn of a Pallid Cuckoo at Clarkesdale (near
