I know that I ask what are probably the most stupid questions on this list,
but I must be the worst possible identifier of birds ever.

In our house (in the outer west of Sydney) the west-facing windows are
covered with solar film which, in the daytime, acts as a mirror from
outside.

Several weeks ago I was standing at the kitchen sink when a small-ish (about
17 cm long) bird landed on the outside window sill and spent some time
studying its reflection. This afforded me very close-up (say, 30 cm
distant) views for about 2 minutes.

Its general shape and head configuration and its bill (dark, not overly
short, straight, thin) looked to me as if it was a lark-type bird. But in
colour it was a soft brownish-grey all over, except that on its breast it
has seven individual black feathers, spaced irregularly across and down the
breast, without any seeming pattern. I could clearly see that each black
'spot' on the breast was a single individual feather.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Regards

Reid
