I have what may be a silly question.

Compact digital cameras are now available with 4 Mega pixels and 10X optical zoom, said to be equivalent to a equivalent to 38-380mm on a 35mm camera.
On paper this seems to be getting into the range that could be useful for bird photography, at far less cost than a digital SLR and zoom lense.  It also sounds a bit too good to be true.

Can anyone offer any comments or experience?
