Hi all
Just a quick report, late and all as it is....
Last Friday went to Lake Samsonvale (~40 mins NW Brisbane CBD)looking
for previously reported Bitterns and Painted Snipe - saw neither, but
did have Latham's Snipe on the shoreline in front of the cemetry. Met
Matt G and, in convoy, we travelled to Lake Kurwongbah, stopping off at
a fence protected swamp/pond on Protheroe Rd. (I call it Gavin's swamp!)
Peering between the chain links we managed to find a Spotlesss Rail
then, following it's progress, we found a Baillon's Crake - both in the
same bino vision for a few seconds! Checking the 'back' of the reedbeds
a few minutes later we picked up at least 2 more Spotless Rails
scurrying around.
Moving on to the scrub around the Scout's Hut at Lake Kuwongbah we found
2 Fuscous Honeyeaters among other commoner species.
Finally headed out to Bribie Island (~1 hour north Brisbane CBD) in
Matt's car and to Buckley's Hole. Foreign Terns and plovers had been on
my mind, but, alas, the beach was deserted. We did see a Jabiru circle
in and land somewhere in the reed beds south of the 'hole'. Had a look
at Kakadu - 2 Eastern Curlews the only waders in evidence.
A good day's birding including a total of 7 raptor species for me.
