This morning I accompanied Nevil Lazarus to Sheldon Forest in
Sydney's northern suburbs for, in my case, a second look at the
Superb Fruit-Dove. Nevil wanted to photograph the bird, a rare
visitor to Sydney.
At one stage we viewed the bird from behind and were surprised to
note that it had a broad, blue, sub-terminal, tail band. I checked
my field guides and some photographic tomes but none of them
appeared to mention or show this feature. In somewhat trying
conditions for photography Nevil managed a fairly good shot showing
this feature. The photo can be seen on Ozbirdpix.
Does anyone more familiar with this species than me, have any
comment about this blue tailband? For instance does it indicate a
different sub-species or is it quite normal. If normal why isn't
shown or described in the field guides and other bird books?
Regards, Andy
